Composers' Seminars - Autumn Term 2009

  • Reto Stadelmann: recent work.

    Oct 20 | 16:00 | 106

Stadelmann discusses aspects of his compositional work, focusing especially on the consideration of broader artistic contexts that involve collaboration with other professional artists and interactions with social groups of all sorts. By way of illustration he offers three projects that are situated in three different working domains: Menetekel (theatre procession at the foot of mountainous Pilatus); a selection of productions with my culture education programme Kwaggawerk; and a collaboration with Swiss object artist Barbara Jäggi.

Reto Stadelmann (b. 1977), Swiss composer, studied composition at the London College of Music (BMus Hons) and the Royal Northern College of Music (MMus). From 2005-2007 he was a pupil of York Höler at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. He is currently studying with Bill Brooks at the University of York.

  • Gerhard Stäbler - we live the opposite daring

    Nov 10 | 16:00 | 106

During the last years Gerhard Stäbler has composed chamber, choir and orchestral works in which he featured poetic fragments of the ancient Greek poet Sappho. In those fragments he found profound links to his compositional aesthetic, which is focused on the needs of "today", with its ties to the past, and the future. In his music Stäbler considers all senses; his music often transcends conventional frameworks (and therefore the audience's expectations), be it through the use of gestures or movement in space, through lighting and olfactory stimulation, or an active integration of the audience.

Gerhard Stäbler, born in 1949 in Southern Germany, is one of the leading composers of his generation in Germany. Possessed of a radical mind, technical skill, and a phenomenal breadth of imagination and passion, he is internationally known for his orchestral works, operas, chamber music, and solo instrument pieces. He has given many concert and lecture tours in Europe, North and South America, Australia, the Middle East and the Far East. In addition, Stäbler has organized festivals and multimedia events worldwide.
