Instrumental and Vocal Workshops - Autumn Term 2009

Vocal workshops take place on Tuesdays at 4pm in 058 (unless otherwise stated). Instrumental workshops take place on Wednesdays at 2pm in 106.

All students, teachers and staff are welcome to attend the sessions, which are free. If you have any questions please contact Liz Haddon: heh501@york.ac.uk


Week 2

October 20th Vocal Introductory Session - 4pm in room 058

John Potter and Liz Haddon will introduce the vocal workshops – do come and contribute to the discussion – all welcome

October 21st Instrumental Introductory Session - 2pm in room 107 (please note change of room)

All welcome to hear more about the sessions and contribute to the discussion which will involve your suggestions for planning the workshops in the Spring and Summer terms.


Week 3

October 27th Vocal Health for singers - 4pm in room 058

Sanchita Farruque from BAPAM, the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine will be here to talk about preventative steps singers can take to safeguard their vocal health. Sanchita is a singer and her work with BAPAM takes her to various UK conservatoires where she helps music students optimise their vocal health and improve their performance. Aspects of this session will be useful for instrumentalists – all welcome!

October 28th Latin Jazz and Grooves - 2pm in room 106

This workshop is led by Zezo Olimpio, who teaches jazz and improvised music in the department. Zezo says: Join me, Brazilian pianist Zezo Olimpio, for an afternoon of Latin American jazz & grooves! This workshop will focus on the differences and similarities between the Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms. We would cover several Latin grooves and their phrasing and subdivisions. Topics will include samba, bossa-nova, salsa, claves, montunos, and much more. This will be a highly participative workshop where I would encourage everyone to take part with his or her instruments or on percussion. No prior experience is required and all instruments are welcome.


Week 4

3rd November - Black Hair - 4pm - in the concert hall

Music Theatre Workshops: Members of ensemble-in-residence Black Hair lead a practical workshop in devising music theatre. Suitable for composers and performers of all kinds. http://www.blackhairensemble.co.uk/

4th November - Joan Dixon - 2pm in room 106

Joan teaches piano and recorder in the department and she will coach any solo instrumentalists, duets or chamber groups. Joan specialises in baroque and classical music and is particularly keen to work on ornamentation for slow movements in this session, though she’ll be happy to coach any music that you want to bring. There will be a sign-up sheet on the notice board at the top of the stairs in due course.

Week 5

10th November – Juice – 4pm in 058

11th November – Charlotte Bishop - 2pm in room 106

Charlotte plays cello with the ensemble Black Hair and her session will look at contemporary string playing – bring any questions you have on notation, techniques etc as well as pieces / sections of pieces that you’d like some help with. 24th November - Black Hair - 4pm - in the concert hall

Music Theatre Workshops: Members of ensemble-in-residence Black Hair lead a practical workshop in devising music theatre. Suitable for composers and performers of all kinds.

25th November - Catherine Laws - 2pm in 106

Catherine’s workshop will look at the idea of the extended piano, including working with other sound sources. She will play some music by Juliana Hodkinson which takes Webern’s variations as its starting point before incorporating musical toys and gestures, and will also demonstrate other works of this nature. Catherine plays with the ensemble Black Hair as well as with other ensembles in the UK and abroad. She is also a Fellow at the Orpheus Institute, Ghent. http://www.blackhairensemble.co.uk/


Week 8

1st December - Jacob Heringman - 4pm in 058

Jacob teaches lute in the department and his workshop will be part lecture/demonstration and part masterclass, exploring French and Italian lute songs of the early sixteenth century, in particular the less well-known Parisian chanson repertoire (c.1550) and the Italian frotolla repertoire (c. 1510). John Potter will be singing with Jacob to demonstrate some of the music. 2nd December - Lisa Osborne - 2pm in 106
