Paul Bunyan, Benjamin Britten

Welcome to the University of York Department of Music Practical Project 2006 website. Here, you will find everything you need to know about our production of the operetta Paul Bunyan, which is scheduled to be performed on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th November.

Composed by Benjamin Britten (libretto by WH Auden) in the early 1940s, Paul Bunyan is an exciting and moving tale about the adventures of the giant lumberjack Paul and his fellow pioneers as they forge and shape the American countryside.

A heart warming legend conveyed in beautiful music, this seldom-performed piece of musical theatre has everything you might want for an enjoyable evening. Lumberjacks, singing geese, cats and squirrels, soup & beans, and of course, a blue cow all feature at some point in the plot of this eccentric opera.

We hope you enjoy the following pages as much as we have enjoyed participating.
