2009: Composer Anniversaries
Becky Thumpston

2009 sees the anniversaries of four of the biggest names in music history: the 250th anniversary of the death of Handel; the 200th anniversary of the death of Haydn; the 200th anniversary of the birth of Mendelssohn, and the 350th anniversary of the birth of Purcell.

The University Chamber Choir and Baroque Ensemble are celebrating Haydn’s anniversary with a performance of Joseph Haydn’s Harmoniemesse Hob: XXII/14, alongside Michael Haydn’s Requiem in C minor on 4 March; while the University Choir celebrate Handel with a performance of the Coronation Anthems with the Yorkshire Baroque Soloists on 18 March. The music of Purcell will be showcased in the ‘Baroque Day’ on 2 May, with concerts throughout the day exploring different aspects of Purcell’s varied output; and Mendelssohn's Elijah is to be performed in the summer by the University Choir and Symphony Orchestra in York Minster.
