Definitive Saxes is coming Timothy Twomey ‘Definitive Saxes’ is going to show everyone what the Brits can do, with two concerts of new music and arrangements by British composers. In the first concert, the University of York Saxophone Quartet will be performing a range of published works by composers including Roger May and Jonathan Dove, as well as a couple of new, unpublished works. The evening concert is going to be absolutely packed with saxes. The first half will see three world premières of works for sax ensemble and a performance of a piece premiered last term in Beverley. In addition, the first of our visiting ensembles, the ‘Interference Trio’, starring three of the Royal Northern’s finest on sax, marimba and piano, will wow us with a piece commissioned for them. The second half is what we’ve all been waiting for. The National Saxophone Choir will conclude the concert with their own set of pieces and arrangements for the sax family from the tiny Soprillo to the behemoth contrabass. This will surely be a spectacle to behold! Definitive Saxes will be playing in the Sir Jack Lyons Concert hall on 8 March. The first concert is at 1pm and is free to students and £2 to all others. The evening concert will begin at 5pm. Tickets £7 for adults, £5 concessions BUT only £3 with a University of York University Card! All tickets are available on the door.
