Writing about his experience of postgraduate musical life at York, Guy Tudor comments, ‘Studying a subject which involves us spending so much time together, it’s no wonder we are a sociable group of students! Everyone wants to get involved and help each other out.’ And he is right. This fact is highlighted by the number of people who have written for YUMU, bringing you the exciting and varied edition you are reading now! So far this term, numerous projects involving student collaboration have taken place. Here in issue three of YUMU you can read about several of the exciting projects that have, or are soon to take place. Francesca Geach explains the motivations behind Operagasmic and Elizabeth Dyer explains how she set about producing Daphnis. Anna Goldbeck-Wood interviews Jonathon Storey in the run-up to his performance of Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto with the University Chamber Orchestra, and Desmond Clarke documents the hugely successful Ives Day. Of the many non-department specific articles, I explore the benefits of the new classical chart, Iain MacKenzie celebrates Robert Burns’ musical legacy, and Susie Murray explores the symbolism of the music played at Obama’s Inaugural speech; one of the defining moments in modern world history. On our small editorial team, we agree that this is the best issue of YUMU to date - with a wide ranging, up to date and varied content - so we hope you enjoy it!
