Something from Guy! Guy Tudor I was ready for change. Leaving my undergraduate life behind me, I handed over the power of Huddersfield University Music Students Society (HUMSS) to my successor. For those who haven’t already guessed, I graduated from Huddersfield University in July, 2008. While I had greatly enjoyed my Huddersfield years, I knew I needed change. The same old routine had become tiresome and I wanted new challenges. York seemed the ideal place. Once my place on the MA course had been confirmed in late July, I couldn’t wait to begin. I didn’t know what to expect, although I knew for sure that it wouldn’t be anything like Huddersfield.
I have found the department to be very welcoming and friendly, and have been amazed by how involved everyone seems to be with all aspects of musical life. Studying a subject which involves us spending so much time together, it’s no wonder we are a sociable group of students! Everyone wants to get involved and help each other out. The range of activities is almost overwhelming, and I have had to be careful not to over-commit myself. Even now, half way through my second term, I’m always busy, despite apparently being a ‘part time’ student. I’m not complaining; I would much rather be busy than bored silly! Since arriving, I have taken part in many excellent concerts – a highlight being ‘Spem in Alium’ in York Minster’s Chapter House. What a fantastic experience, and all organised by students! Another highlight was JS Bach’s Mass in B minor, performed by Yorkshire Bach Choir and Yorkshire Baroque Soloists. I’m certain there will be more fantastic events to get involved with, and in all honestly, I can’t wait! The need to buy scores for performance has caught my attention, as during my time at Huddersfield all parts were provided by the music library. York, however, is a different kettle of fish – I dread to think how much money I have spent on music. However, creating a personal library is a very worthwhile investment. In years to come, I will be able to take scores from my shelf and remember their performances. As I am here for another year, I should have a good collection by the time I finish! On the subject of concerts, my MA recital of music from Reformation England (including masterpieces by Thomas Tallis, John Taverner, John Sheppard and Christopher Tye) will take place during week four of summer term. Come and hear some of the greatest works from the period, performed by 16 department singers. I think that’s enough! Next issue, Guy’s musings continue, so watch this space...! |
