I’m currently on a six-month internship with Opera North. It is wonderful to have the opportunity to discover how a big company operates – from the early stages of auditions and fixing right through to the opening night. As my role involves working with the chorus and orchestra, I have the pleasure of seeing lots of rehearsals. This season’s events include music by Puccini (seeing Tosca at two in the afternoon is pretty mental!), Strauss and Gershwin, as well as a new operetta Skin Deep – composed by a York graduate. Next week the orchestra starts sessions with Rufus Wainwright for his debut opera Prima Donna and we are all fairly manic with anticipation! There’s quite a mix and quite the schedule to pull it all off! In the meantime I’m arranging scores for a musical that I am directing at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe. I am also working with Kirklees Council to compose music for a short architectural preview film. My longer-term goal is to develop as a composer, something I was very grateful to be able to do as a student in York and through the residential courses based in Dartington and Orkney. Soon I’d like to do an MA in composition with a focus in media, though orchestral management is another avenue I’m attracted to. I seem to change my mind a lot so I’m ‘keeping my options open’ for now! |
