Welcome to the Department of Music

Welcome to the Music Department at the University of York. This is one of the liveliest music departments in the country, with a busier schedule of performance activities than you will find in any other university department. The range of study, performance and composition is extremely wide, both within our taught courses and at research level.

Our teaching and research staff include distinguished scholars, composers and performers, and both our teaching and research have received top ratings in recent government surveys (QAA/RAE). Our Graduate School is unusually large for a UK department with over one hundred MA and PhD students, working in outstanding facilities. We place the experience of music - making it and listening to it - at the centre of all our endeavours, and our students are able to share in music making of all kinds at the highest level, as you will see from the pages of this website.
