Welcome to the Music Department at the University of York. This is one of the liveliest music departments in the country, with a busier schedule of performance activities than you will find in any other university department. The range of study, performance and composition is extremely wide, both within our taught courses and at research level.
Our teaching and research staff include distinguished scholars, composers and performers, and both our teaching and research have received top ratings in recent government surveys (QAA/RAE). Our Graduate School is unusually large for a UK department with over one hundred MA and PhD students, working in outstanding facilities. We place the experience of music - making it and listening to it - at the centre of all our endeavours, and our students are able to share in music making of all kinds at the highest level, as you will see from the pages of this website.
Jonathan Wainwright
Head of Department
All prospective candidates applying for an AHRC grant at York under the Block Grant scheme should note that your application must be submitted to the University by Monday 1 March 2010.
Prior to this, you also need to have been made an offer for a place to study at York, so early application for a place on our postgraduate programmes is extremely important if you are seeking AHRC support for your studies.
Applications for AHRC funding are made to the University Graduate Office, not the department directly as in previous years.
Applications for a postgraduate place in music can be made online here.
